Why Is My Upstairs So Hot in Summer? A Columbus Attic Guide

If your upstairs is so hot in summer that the air conditioning cannot keep up, the cause is usually in the attic rather than in the ductwork, and in Columbus it is most often ventilation. A roof in full August sun reaches surface temperatures far above the air temperature. Whether that heat stays in your attic and pushes down into the bedrooms, or moves through and out, is decided by three things: intake, exhaust, and insulation. Here is how to work out which one is failing at your house.
How Attic Ventilation Is Supposed to Work
A properly ventilated attic is not sealed. It is a continuous flow path. Cool outside air enters low, through vents in the soffit under your roof edge. It travels up the underside of the roof deck, picking up heat as it goes, and exits high through a ridge vent or roof vents near the peak. The system is passive and it works on the fact that hot air rises.
Two things break it. If there is no intake at the soffit, the exhaust has nothing to pull, and the ridge vent does almost nothing. If there is no exhaust at the top, incoming air has nowhere to go. Both halves have to be present and roughly balanced.
The Most Common Failure in Central Ohio Homes
Blocked soffit intake, and it is usually caused by insulation. Someone adds insulation in the attic, does a thorough job right out to the edges, and packs it against the underside of the roof at the eaves. That is exactly where the intake air is supposed to enter. The insulation is doing its job and strangling the ventilation at the same time.
The fix is inexpensive: baffles, sometimes called rafter vents, installed at each rafter bay to hold a clear channel between the insulation and the roof deck. This is one of the highest value, lowest cost things you can do in an older Columbus attic, and it also reduces winter ice damming, which we cover in our article on what ice dams do to gutters.
How to Diagnose It Yourself
On a hot afternoon, go up into the attic briefly and pay attention to three things.
- Is it dramatically hotter than outside? An attic will always be warmer, but one that feels like an oven with no air movement is not ventilating.
- Can you see daylight at the eaves, looking along the floor line to the roof edge? If insulation has sealed that gap, your intake is blocked.
- Is there any exhaust at the peak? From outside, look at the ridge line for a continuous vent, or for box vents near the top of the slope.
Also look for signs of the moisture problem that poor ventilation causes in winter: rusted nail points, dark staining on the underside of the deck, or compressed damp insulation. An attic that is hot in July is usually damp in January, and the second problem is more expensive than the first.
When It Is Insulation Rather Than Ventilation
If the attic is ventilating adequately but the rooms below are still hot, the issue is likely the insulation layer on the attic floor. Older Central Ohio homes frequently have far less than current recommendations, and settled or compressed insulation performs worse than its stated depth suggests. Look for uneven coverage, gaps around the hatch, and areas flattened by storage or by someone walking through.
Air leaks matter as much as depth. Gaps around recessed lights, bath fans, plumbing stacks, and the attic hatch let conditioned air escape upward and let attic heat down. Sealing those is cheap and makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
When It Is the Roof Itself
Sometimes it genuinely is the roof, and there are two versions. A very dark roof in full sun runs hotter, which matters more on a poorly ventilated attic than a well ventilated one. More seriously, if the deck has been damp for years from a ventilation problem, the sheathing may be degraded, and that only gets addressed properly during a replacement. The Order to Work Through It
- Check intake first. Blocked soffits are the most common cause and the cheapest fix.
- Check exhaust second. Ridge vent or roof vents adequate for the attic size.
- Then air seal the penetrations between the living space and the attic.
- Then top up insulation to current levels, keeping it clear of the baffles.
- Only then look at the roof surface or the HVAC system.
Doing it in that order avoids the common and expensive mistake of adding air conditioning capacity to fight a problem that a hundred dollars of baffles would have solved.
